Manaus mayor renovates Feira do 40, pledges overhaul of all city markets
Mayor Renato Junior of Manaus inaugurated the renovated Feira do 40 in the Raiz neighbourhood on 28 July. The refurbishment, the first complete overhaul of the market in more than 20 years, replaced the roof, upgraded electricity and plumbing, added LED lighting, new bathrooms, ramp access and other safety and comfort improvements for vendors and shoppers.
Renato Junior, who grew up working in fairs, announced that all 33 municipal markets will be modernised before the end of his term, extending the programme coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply, Centre and Informal Commerce (Semacc). The mayor also highlighted parallel works in the neighbourhood, including drainage upgrades on Avenida Costa e Silva and pavement repairs on nearby streets.
The project aims to improve public‑market conditions, boost local commerce and provide dignified workplaces for the thousands of permission‑holders who depend on these venues.
