Anápolis hospital ordered to stop using domestic drills in surgeries
The Public Ministry of Goiás (MPGO) has recommended that the Fundação Universitária Evangélica (Funev) immediately cease using domestic drills and perforators in orthopedic surgeries at the Hospital Municipal Alfredo Abrahão in Anápolis.
Sanitary surveillance inspections conducted between 2022 and 2026 identified the practice as a recurring, high-risk non-compliance. Authorities previously seized 11 domestic drills, though it was reported that the seals on the seized equipment were later violated.
A director at Funev acknowledged the use of domestic tools, citing the high cost and maintenance requirements of specialized pneumatic surgical drills as the reason for the practice. However, the MPGO and health authorities noted that domestic tools lack sanitary registration and cannot be properly sterilized, significantly increasing the risk of serious infections for patients.
