ANS suspends Hapvida price hikes and contract cancellations
The National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) has issued a preventive injunction to block planned price increases and unilateral contract cancellations by the health insurance provider Hapvida. The regulator's decision follows the company's announcement that approximately 947,000 contracts, representing about 11% to 12% of its total portfolio, could be discontinued or undergo significant two-digit price adjustments.
ANS Director-President Wadih Damous stated that the scale of the proposed actions suggests a strong appearance of prohibited “risk selection,” where a company targets specific groups to improve margins. Hapvida, however, maintains that the review is a standard procedure to address economic imbalances and unpaid invoices, noting that the process is intended to improve cash generation and margins.
Following the announcement, Hapvida (HAPV3) shares experienced a decline of approximately 5.79%. The company has requested a meeting with the ANS to present technical and contractual justifications for its proposed changes.
