Ansan City to develop street mall in Wongok-dong
Ansan City is advancing a project to develop a street mall in the Wongok-dong Multicultural Village Special Zone. The project aims to create a multi-functional commercial space that integrates shopping, dining, culture, and relaxation, designed to encourage longer visitor stays.
Following a shift from a temporary container-based concept to a permanent steel-reinforced concrete structure to ensure safety and durability, the project budget has increased from 8.8 billion won to 17.3 billion won. The city plans to begin construction as early as the beginning of 2027, with a target completion date in 2028.
The development will utilize the diverse global food and cultural resources of the Wongok-dong area to create a unique streetscape. The plan includes establishing safe pedestrian zones, configuring retail and dining spaces that reflect local characteristics, and developing tourism and cultural content linked to existing commercial districts. Ansan Mayor Lee Min-geun stated that the project aims to revitalize the local economy by making the area a destination for both domestic and foreign visitors.
