Ansaru suspects face trial for Oyo school abduction and killings

The trial of five suspected members of the Ansaru terrorist group has commenced in the Federal High Court in Abuja. The defendants—Mahmud Muhammad, Abubakar Abbas, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsu Sani—pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges concerning the May 15 abduction of approximately 46 pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

A prosecution witness, identified as AAA, testified that the victims endured a 56-day ordeal in captivity. The witness described being moved through six different locations, often barefoot and sleeping on grass under harsh weather conditions. The witness also stated that the attackers arrived on roughly 12 motorcycles and that the group intended to use the captives to negotiate the release of Ansaru members rather than for ransom.

The incident resulted in the deaths of two teachers, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun. The defendants face potential sentences ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment, or even the death penalty under Nigeria’s 2022 anti-terrorism law, if convicted. The proceedings were previously delayed to allow the defendants to retain their preferred legal counsel, Bala Dakum.
