Ansenuza National Park records birth of four maned wolf pups

In Ansenuza National Park, Córdoba, a female maned wolf named Cucusa has given birth to four pups. The birth was documented using eight camera traps, which allowed researchers to observe the family without direct human interference.

The discovery was made possible through a monitoring project by the organization Aves Argentinas. Specialists noticed changes in Cucusa’s movement patterns via her satellite tracking collar, prompting conservationist Augusto Distel to install cameras in the area. The footage revealed that the mother transports her offspring between different shelters every two or three days, a survival strategy during this vulnerable stage of their life cycle.

The maned wolf is the largest canid in South America. In Argentina, it is considered a Provincial Natural Monument and is categorized as vulnerable nationally, while the IUCN Red List classifies it as near threatened globally.
