Anseong flea market truck crash kills mother and son

A 1-ton truck crashed into a flea market event at Gongdo 10 Children's Park in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, on the morning of September 19, resulting in seven casualties. The victims, who were volunteers preparing for the ‘2026 Green Sharing Market’ hosted by Anseong City, included a mother in her 40s and her teenage son, both of whom died after being struck by the vehicle. Five other volunteers sustained various injuries, including fractures and respiratory distress.

The driver, a man in his 60s and a contract worker for Anseong City, was arrested. While he initially stated he mistook the accelerator for the brake, he later claimed the vehicle experienced sudden unintended acceleration. The truck, owned by Anseong City, was reportedly being maneuvered into the park for promotional purposes when the accident occurred.

Police have applied for an arrest warrant for the driver on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents. Authorities have requested a detailed forensic examination by the National Forensic Service to analyze the vehicle's event data recorder (EDR) and digital tachograph (DTG) to determine the exact cause of the crash and investigate whether safety management protocols were followed by the organizers.
