Antalya coast seabed covered by gelatinous layer threatening marine life
An underwater investigation conducted by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gökoğlu and his team from Akdeniz University has revealed a brown, gelatinous layer covering the seabed along the coasts of Antalya. This layer, which has spread across a wide area, covers pebbles and rocks, particularly in areas with weak currents.
Prof. Gökoğlu warned that this sediment acts like a “carpet” over the seabed, covering organisms living among the sand and gravel and preventing them from exchanging oxygen. He noted that the buildup is caused by suspended solids brought in by freshwater and structures formed by certain algae.
The investigation also highlighted significant changes in water temperature. Gökoğlu described the sensation of entering these areas as feeling like entering a “hot bath.” He attributed these environmental changes, including the drop in groundwater levels, to activities such as drilling and the continuous use of pumps for construction projects in areas like Konyaaltı.
