Antalya farmer uses soilless methods for high-value saffron production

Nur Hamit Mayıl, a financial advisor based in the Manavgat district of Antalya, has successfully transitioned to high-value saffron production using soilless farming techniques. Supported by credit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mayıl established a 100-square-meter facility utilizing 55,000 saffron bulbs.

During the first harvest, the facility produced 1 kilogram of saffron, which was sold at approximately 700 lira per gram. This achievement has allowed Mayıl to reach 80 percent of the one-year amortization goal. The production model utilizes a two-stage process: indoor cultivation in November to harvest the spice, and outdoor soil-based bulb multiplication starting in late May. The indoor system reportedly yields approximately 20 percent more than open-field farming while eliminating risks of heavy metals and pesticides.

Quality analyses conducted at Süleyman Demirel University laboratories have certified the products as first-quality with ISO 36-32 documentation. Due to the success of the venture, Mayıl has begun providing consultancy services to other investors interested in entering the soilless saffron market.
