Antalya hotel loses turtle-friendly certification over environmental violations

A five-star hotel operating on Denizyaka Beach in the Manavgat district of Antalya has had its ‘Turtle Friendly Tourism Certificate’ revoked. The decision follows findings that the establishment failed to sustain environmental criteria designed to protect sea turtles and their nesting grounds.

According to the Ecological Research Association (EKAD) and the TUI Care Foundation, the hotel had previously qualified for the certification. However, following a change in ownership earlier this year, the facility reportedly began digging up dunes despite prohibitions, moving sand to other areas, and using the resulting pits as waste disposal sites for trash and debris.

EKAD officials stated that the certificate was canceled because the hotel failed to implement necessary improvements regarding beach equipment placement, nesting area protection, and the management of artificial lighting, which negatively impacts sea turtles. The certification program requires hotels to use specific red lighting to protect hatchlings and maintain clear paths to the sea.
