Indonesia Rupiah Slides Near 18,150 per Dollar Amid Corruption Probe and Geopolitical Tensions

The Indonesian rupiah weakened to between Rp 18,115 and Rp 18,150 per US dollar in mid‑July 2026, marking a drop of 44–62 points from the previous close. Analysts linked the decline to negative market reaction to the alleged mega‑corruption case involving former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah, which has heightened tensions between law‑enforcement agencies and raised concerns over legal certainty.

Economist Ibrahim Assuaibi warned that a weakened legal environment could erode investor confidence and jeopardise the government's 8 % growth target. He also cited external pressures – namely the escalating US‑Iran conflict, threats to close the Strait of Hormuz and a strong US dollar – as factors that could sustain the rupiah’s depreciation. One report noted a brief rally, with the currency closing stronger at Rp 18,091, driven by expectations of US naval actions affecting oil shipments.

Overall, the combination of domestic corruption allegations and heightened geopolitical risks has left the rupiah in a volatile range, prompting calls for more pro‑market policies to restore confidence.
