Antamina supports technical guinea pig breeding in Áncash

Compañía Minera Antamina is supporting the technical breeding of guinea pigs (cuyes) to strengthen the rural economy in the Áncash region of Peru. The initiative focuses on the Fortaleza Valley and the province of Huarmey, where producers are improving technical capacities, shed infrastructure, and animal genetics.

In the Fortaleza Valley, the region records sales of more than 5,000 guinea pigs per month, generating monthly incomes exceeding S/130,000. Efforts are also underway with SENASA to certify the first Primary Transformation Center for guinea pigs in Chasquitambo, a project coordinated with AGROMERCADO to facilitate access to new markets.

In Huarmey, a capacity-building project for rural women involves 376 producing families, with women representing 81% of participants. The project aims to enhance genetic quality and commercialization opportunities through specialized infrastructure and improved productive practices.
