Antananarivo reinstates traffic lights after decades of absence

The recent installation of traffic lights at several intersections in Antananarivo, Madagascar, has caused confusion among drivers and pedestrians. This marks the first time such equipment has been used in the capital in over 20 to 30 years.

Local authorities, including the municipal police and the director of transport and urban mobility, have issued guidance to manage the transition. Officials emphasized that vehicles must stop at red lights regardless of pedestrian presence, and pedestrians should cross when the light is green. Despite these efforts, some motorists continue to ignore red signals, and pedestrians remain hesitant to cross.

The reintroduction of traffic signals highlights significant infrastructure challenges in Madagascar. While the country possesses substantial natural resources such as graphite, nickel, and cobalt, it faces persistent issues with decaying roads, unreliable electricity, and bureaucratic obstacles that hinder large-scale development projects.
