Antarctic cruise sector sees infrastructure upgrades and new hybrid vessel

The Antarctic cruise season is seeing significant developments in infrastructure and vessel technology. In Ushuaia, the port has begun receiving the first cruises of the 2026-2027 season following an infrastructure program. Improvements include upgraded lighting, sanitation, and the replacement of 75 fenders on the main pier to ensure mooring safety. Additionally, Anpyn is optimizing water and electricity services and updating fire protection systems. These measures, alongside a new Operations Regulation, have contributed to a reduction in operating costs for shipping lines exceeding 10%.

In Chile, Antarctica21 announced that the Magellan Discoverer, the first hybrid-electric vessel built in the Americas, is expected to arrive in Punta Arenas by late October 2026. The 94-meter ice-class PC6 ship features high-efficiency energy technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and allow zero-emission operations during specific segments. The vessel will support scientific research through an agreement with the Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach), carrying a $500,000 instrument to transmit real-time data from Antarctica. The ship is scheduled to begin its inaugural voyage in December 2026.
