Antarctic ice loss slowed temporarily by rare weather anomaly
A study published in the journal Nature has identified a rare weather anomaly that temporarily slowed the loss of the Antarctic ice sheet between 2021 and 2023. Researchers found that an unusual warming in the western Pacific Ocean, specifically within the warm pool region, triggered large-scale atmospheric Rossby waves.
These waves created a high-pressure anomaly over East Antarctica, which channeled moisture from the Indian Ocean toward the continent. This resulted in exceptionally heavy snowfall in East Antarctica, which offset the ice mass lost in West Antarctica during that specific period.
Experts emphasize that this phenomenon is a rare event occurring roughly once a decade and does not indicate a reversal or halt of global warming. The research, which included contributors from the HUN-REN Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, suggests that tropical climate shifts can influence atmospheric processes far beyond the tropics, potentially impacting weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere and Europe.
