Antarctica scientific expeditions reveal massive marine biodiversity

Scientific expeditions in Antarctica have revealed significant biological discoveries within the region's extreme marine environments. An Australian expedition aboard the RSV Nuyina near the Denman Glacier focused on studying the impact of global warming on ice shelves. During the mission, researchers collected a diverse array of marine life, including octopuses, starfish, crustaceans, sea spiders, and translucent, eyeless sea pigs (Protelpidia murrayi).

In a separate finding in the Weddell Sea, researchers using the Polarstern icebreaker discovered a massive reproductive colony of Antarctic icefish. Utilizing the OFOBS remote sensing system near the Filchner Ice Shelf, scientists identified an estimated 60 million nests covering approximately 240 square kilometers. This discovery represents roughly 60,000 tons of biomass, with nests consisting of circular excavations in the muddy seafloor reinforced by small stones.
