Albanese and Trump discuss AUKUS and tariff exemptions
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump held a wide-ranging phone call to discuss the AUKUS defense pact, trade tariffs, and regional security. Albanese confirmed that the AUKUS project, which involves the delivery of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, remains “full steam ahead” and continues to benefit Australia, the US, and the UK.
During the discussion, Albanese appealed for a complete exemption or a freeze on the 12.5 per cent tariff currently imposed on Australian exports. These tariffs resulted from a Section 301 investigation into forced labor within supply chains. Albanese highlighted Australia’s record in addressing modern slavery and requested that the US consider Australia’s status as a close ally. President Trump reportedly agreed to give the request consideration.
The leaders also addressed several other international issues, including the conflict in the Middle East, critical minerals investment, and the 75th anniversary of the US-Australia alliance. Trump also expressed gratitude for more than 180 Australian firefighters sent to assist with US wildfires.
