Anthony Albanese faces scrutiny over discretionary staffing powers
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing criticism regarding his discretionary authority to allocate additional highly paid personal staff to federal politicians. While federal legislation entitles each MP to five electorate officers, the provision of extra staff remains at the Prime Minister's discretion.
Scrutiny intensified after it was revealed that Albanese approved 15 advisers for the Greens shortly before the party voted against an inquiry into his staffing powers. Additionally, the Prime Minister has faced criticism for allowing former independent senator Tammy Tyrrell to retain extra staff upon joining the Labor Party, and for offering additional support to former opposition leader Sussan Ley.
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has joined independent senators in demanding higher staffing levels. Hanson has requested proportional staffing similar to the Greens, which would increase One Nation’s staff from four to nine. Hanson argued that increased staffing is necessary for basic responsibilities, such as coordinating security and liaising with the Australian Federal Police to ensure the safety of MPs in the community.
