Anthony Albanese to urge climate action at UN General Assembly
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to address Climate Week at the United Nations, warning that global leaders must match the bravery of emergency workers in the fight against global warming. In his keynote speech, Albanese will emphasize that communities can no longer rely solely on adaptation to escalating catastrophes, noting that extreme heat, bushfires, and floods are becoming a matter of “when, not if.”
Albanese will highlight Australia’s renewable energy potential, supported by gas-powered generation, as a means to meet the nation’s 2035 emissions reduction targets. He is also expected to focus on climate action within the Pacific region as part of Australia’s bid for a United Nations Security Council seat.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa to discuss topics including fuel security, defense, and online child safety. Additionally, Australia is a signatory to a major joint statement calling for increased controls on artificial intelligence technology.
