Anthony Appiah charged with GH¢480,000 fraud in Accra

Anthony Appiah, a 44-year-old businessman, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court facing charges of defrauding a businesswoman of GH¢480,000. Appiah pleaded not guilty to the charge of obtaining money through false pretences.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Nyamekye, alleged that in May 2025, Appiah approached the complainant claiming he had secured a distribution contract with BEL-AQUA Company. He reportedly requested $50,000 to execute the contract, promising repayment within two weeks. After receiving GH¢480,000, Appiah failed to return the funds.

Upon verifying the claim with BEL-AQUA Company, the complainant discovered that Appiah held no such contract and had no business relationship with the firm. Following unsuccessful attempts to recover the money, the complainant petitioned the police, leading to Appiah's arrest. The court admitted Appiah to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a public servant earning at least GH¢4,000.
