Anthony Fauci faces contempt of Congress vote after Senate hearing
A Republican-led Senate committee, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, has voted to hold former NIAID Director Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress. The vote follows a July 29, 2026, hearing where Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights more than 100 times to decline answering questions regarding the origins of COVID-19, NIH funding, and pandemic management.
The committee has referred the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution. While President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon for Fauci in early 2025 covering federal offenses related to his government service, legal experts note the pardon may not cover actions taken after January 19, 2025, or potential state and local charges.
Separately, reports have highlighted the history of Dr. Lynn R. Webster, an advisor to the FDA and researcher on opioids. In 2013, the DEA investigated Webster’s Lifetree Pain Clinic in Salt Lake City following allegations of up to 100 overdose deaths. Webster attributed the deaths to suicide, and while the U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah declined to pursue charges, Webster’s ability to prescribe opioids was revoked.
