Anthony Fauci Invokes Fifth Amendment Over 100 Times at Senate Hearing

On July 29, 2026, former U.S. public‑health chief Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The hearing was chaired by Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who led the three‑hour session.

Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right, refusing to answer 15 separate questions and invoking the amendment more than 100 times. He cited advice from his attorneys and a pre‑emptive pardon granted by former President Joe Biden in early 2025, which Republicans say does not shield him from potential perjury charges.

Republican senators, including Josh Hawley, warned that Fauci’s refusal could lead to contempt of Congress, and the committee announced it will vote next week on a resolution to hold him in contempt. During the hearing, one of Fauci’s lawyers was ejected after the chair declined to recognize the attorney. The hearing produced no new confirmed information about the origins of COVID‑19.
