Anthony Garotinho faces eight-year political rights suspension
A Rio de Janeiro judge has ordered the enforcement of an eight-year suspension of political rights for former governor Anthony Garotinho. The decision, issued by Judge Ricardo Cyfer of the 4th Public Treasury Court, requires that the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) be notified of the finality of the conviction.
The ruling stems from an administrative misconduct case involving the alleged diversion of R$ 234.4 million from the Rio de Janeiro State Health Secretariat between 2005 and 2006. Updated calculations indicate the total reimbursement to the public treasury is approximately R$ 2.55 billion, alongside a civil fine of roughly R$ 778,000 and collective moral damages estimated at R$ 11.9 million. The conviction also prohibits Garotinho from contracting with the public administration.
The decision impacts Garotinho’s potential candidacy for the Rio de Janeiro governorship in 2026. While the judicial order mandates the suspension, the final determination regarding his eligibility rests with the Electoral Justice system. Garotinho’s defense argues that the suspension period has already expired, claiming the sentence became final in August 2018 and thus concluded in July 2026.
