Anthony Garotinho's candidacy for Rio governor denied by TRE-RJ

The Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ) has unanimously denied the candidacy of Anthony Garotinho for governor in the 2026 elections. The decision is based on his ineligibility under the 'Ficha Limpa' law, following a conviction for willful administrative misconduct.

The case stems from allegations that Garotinho diverted R$ 234.4 million from the State Health Secretariat between 2005 and 2006, during the administration of his wife, Rosinha Matheus. The court ruled that the conviction, which involved damage to the public treasury and illicit enrichment of third parties, resulted in the suspension of his political rights.

Garotinho's defense has contested the ruling, arguing that the eight-year suspension of his political rights should have been calculated from the date of the original conviction in 2018, meaning the sanction would have expired by August 1, 2026. However, the Electoral Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that the period began in July 2025 when the judgment became final. Garotinho has stated he remains a candidate and intends to appeal the decision to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
