Anthony Joshua Returns to Boxing After Fatal Nigeria Crash, Prepares for July Fight

British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua survived a car crash on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway in December that killed his personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami. Joshua escaped with minor injuries, underwent three months of rehabilitation and has focused his recovery on supporting the families of the two men, saying he is a "good soldier" for their parents.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said the accident left Joshua "physically and mentally damaged" but praised his determination to return to the ring. Joshua will make his comeback on 25 July with a tune‑up bout against Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia, a step toward a planned fight with Tyson Fury at Wembley. He credits working with Oleksandr Usyk for renewed belief and has noted the emotional challenge of the loss. Meanwhile, driver Adeniyi Kayode faces charges of dangerous driving and reckless conduct in connection with the crash.

Joshua’s statements emphasize putting his own grief aside to aid the bereaved families while preparing for the next stages of his boxing career.
