Anthony Loke reports low turnout for commercial driver health screenings
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has expressed concern over the low participation rate in the Healthy and Safe Driver Program (PSS). Despite a target of 30,000 commercial drivers aged 40 to 59, fewer than 20 participants have signed up since the program's implementation began in July 2026.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), offers heavily subsidized health screenings. While the actual cost of a comprehensive check-up is RM85, PERKESO provides a RM55 subsidy, leaving drivers to pay only RM30.
Loke emphasized that regular screenings are vital for detecting asymptomatic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which are critical for the safety of both drivers and the public, particularly those operating passenger or heavy commercial vehicles. The government aims to move beyond simple form verification toward more thorough physical examinations to ensure driver well-being and road safety.
