Anthony Michael Hall discusses turning down John Hughes films

Actor Anthony Michael Hall has discussed his decision to decline roles in two major films directed by John Hughes: ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’.

Reflecting on his career and his relationship with Hughes, Hall explained that he turned down the role of Duckie in ‘Pretty in Pink’ due to concerns regarding character stereotyping. He also noted that the film’s narrative felt too similar to ‘Sixteen Candles’, a previous Hughes collaboration. Hall expressed respect for Jon Cryer, who ultimately played the role, stating that he holds no resentment toward the success of the film.

Hall, a prominent member of the ‘Brat Pack’ known for his work in ‘Sixteen Candles’ and ‘The Breakfast Club’, noted that these choices were part of an effort to diversify his acting portfolio and avoid repetitive roles during his early career.
