Anthropic AI discovers new biological system in bacteriophage DNA
Anthropic has announced the discovery of a previously unknown biological system within the DNA of bacteriophages. The discovery was made by approximately 950 Claude AI agents during a 21-hour autonomous analysis of over 200,000 reverse transcriptase enzymes and billions of protein sequences.
Researchers have named the system Array-associated Reverse Transcriptase (ART). The system consists of three components: a reverse transcriptase enzyme, an adjacent gene, and a long field of regularly spaced DNA repeats. This structure bears a striking resemblance to the CRISPR technology used in gene editing.
Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, noted that the AI identified the pattern in genomic data and proposed experiments for human scientists to validate. While laboratory tests have confirmed that the ART system produces various short RNA molecules, its exact biological function remains unknown. Anthropic emphasized that while the discovery is significant, there is currently no evidence that ART functions as a new gene-editing tool like CRISPR.
