Sam Altman argues AI benefits justify accepting certain risks

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has sparked debate by stating that the world should accept certain negative outcomes and risks associated with artificial intelligence in exchange for its significant benefits to humanity. Altman emphasized that while catastrophic risks must be avoided, the technology should remain widely accessible to ensure human autonomy, contrasting his view with the more restrictive regulatory approach favored by Anthropic.

Altman also identified a security concern regarding the tendency of humans to attribute religious power to AI models or delegate critical reasoning to them. This follows reports of Anthropic conducting discussions with religious leaders to develop a moral framework for its Claude models.

In a separate development, the US Department of Defense has ceased using Anthropic’s AI tools. The decision follows a dispute where the Pentagon requested the removal of certain safety restrictions on Claude models, which Anthropic declined due to concerns regarding mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Anthropic has since taken legal action against the US administration, labeling the security risk designation as unlawful.
