Anthropic and OpenAI subscriptions provide high API-equivalent value
A study by research firm SemiAnalysis indicates that flat-rate AI subscriptions from Anthropic and OpenAI may provide significantly more value than their monthly costs suggest, potentially squeezing profit margins.
By utilizing continuous, long-term workloads such as agentic coding, researchers found that Anthropic’s $200 monthly Claude plan provided usage equivalent to approximately $8,000 in standard API rates. OpenAI’s $200 plan reached an estimated API-equivalent value of $14,000.
While industry insiders previously estimated that a $200 subscription might yield $2,000 worth of tokens, the study suggests that users who maximize weekly limits can reap three to seven times that amount. The findings highlight the high demand placed on services by coding agents and raise questions regarding the long-term sustainability of subsidized subscription models as companies face pressure to achieve profitability.
