Anthropic launches AI cybersecurity mission and free OSS scanner

Anthropic has launched the Anthropic Cyber Mission, a dual-pronged initiative aimed at strengthening cybersecurity through AI. The first component is the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, which provides frontier Claude models and on-site engineers to security providers protecting essential services like power grids, water systems, and transportation. Founding partners include major firms such as Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Hitachi, Palo Alto Networks, and PwC.

The second component is the OSS Scanner, a free service that provides periodic vulnerability scans for open-source software projects. Using powerful models like Claude Mythos, the scanner has already identified over 29,000 potential vulnerabilities in major software projects over a six-month period. To increase speed, these reports are sent directly to maintainers without prior human review, though Anthropic notes this may lead to some invalid findings.

Additionally, Anthropic has restructured its Cyber Verification Program (CVP) into three distinct access tiers: Defense Access for general security operations, Red Team Access for authorized penetration testing, and Specialized Access for high-risk critical infrastructure. This tiered approach allows different levels of model capability and security controls based on the user's specific risk profile and professional requirements.
