Anthropic explores partnership with MatX after failed $7 billion acquisition bid

AI company Anthropic reportedly explored a $7 billion acquisition of MatX, a chip startup founded by former Google engineers, but the deal did not proceed. Instead, the two parties are considering a partnership. MatX specializes in AI accelerator design, and Anthropic’s interest stems from a desire to reduce dependence on third-party hardware providers and develop proprietary chips optimized for its models.

Separately, at the G20 Innovation Ministers Meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, artificial intelligence was a central topic. Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, introduced the ‘Carolina Principles,’ which aim to establish shared goals for investing in basic research and supporting commercialization without requiring the standardization of legal or regulatory systems. During the event, Elon Musk noted via videoconference that excessive regulation could hinder technological progress.
