Anthropic faces lawsuit over Claude Max subscription claims

Anthropic is facing a class action lawsuit regarding its Claude Max subscription tiers. The legal action, filed on September 8, 2026, alleges that the company misrepresented the usage capacity offered to high-volume users.

Marketing for the Claude Max plans promised usage multipliers of 5x or 20x compared to the standard Pro plan, with monthly costs ranging from approximately $100 to $200. However, plaintiffs argue that these multipliers only apply to five-hour session windows that reset frequently, rather than representing total weekly capacity.

The lawsuit claims that the introduction of weekly usage caps in August of last year significantly diminishes the actual value of the higher-priced tier. Specifically, the $200 plan, which is marketed as having four times the capacity of the $100 plan, reportedly only provides a 1.7x increase once weekly limits are factored in. Attorneys for the plaintiffs, including former FTC member Monica Vaca, argue that these restrictions are obscured behind technical definitions and hyperlinks, making it difficult for consumers to understand the true limitations of their purchase.
