Anthropic finds no AI-driven job loss as US unemployment remains low

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that advanced AI systems could eliminate up to 20% of jobs, warning of a looming structural crisis. In contrast, Anthropic chief economist Peter McCrory’s recent 18‑month analysis of U.S. labour market data shows the unemployment rate steady at 4.2%, with prime‑age employment near historic highs. His study found no relative increase in unemployment for occupations heavily exposed to Anthropic’s Claude AI compared with less‑exposed roles. While a Stanford Digital Economy Lab report notes a 16% decline in early‑career employment in the most AI‑exposed jobs since late 2022, overall macro‑economic indicators remain stable, and no mass layoffs have been observed. The findings suggest that fears of an immediate AI‑driven job apocalypse are not reflected in current U.S. labour statistics.
