Anthropic halts Fable project, accelerating Chinese open‑source AI push

Anthropic announced it is discontinuing the Fable open‑source large‑language‑model effort. The decision signals that even well‑funded Western players are hitting scaling and cost limits in the open‑source AI race. With the withdrawal, attention shifts toward Chinese open‑source ecosystems, which are positioned to supply production‑ready models optimized for local languages and workloads. In parallel, NVIDIA’s open‑source Vulkan driver NVK received experimental support for Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) on Linux, merged into Mesa 26.2. Although DLSS remains proprietary, the driver enables Linux users to activate the feature via specific environment variables, with a stable release slated for August 2026. The update reflects a broader trend of major tech firms releasing components as open source, alongside releases from Epic Games, Yandex and RP1.
