Anthropic hires Google chip veteran Amir Salek for custom AI hardware

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI chatbot, has hired Amir Salek to lead its efforts in developing custom AI hardware. Salek is a veteran of Google’s chip division, where he played a central role in the development of the first seven generations of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).

By recruiting Salek, Anthropic aims to reduce its dependence on external chip suppliers such as Nvidia, Google, and Amazon. The company intends to design specialized silicon optimized for its specific Transformer-based algorithms, which could improve computational efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and lower costs for large-scale model training and inference.

Salek will join the company’s compute team and report to James Bradbury. This move follows reports that Anthropic is aggressively securing infrastructure, including a potential $250 million deal with the UK-based startup Fractile for chip capacity. The strategic shift toward vertical integration places Anthropic in direct competition with other AI leaders like OpenAI, which is also pursuing custom silicon through partnerships with companies like Broadcom.
