Anthropic reports Claude AI leads 26% of company R&D work

Anthropic has revealed that its Claude AI model is playing an increasingly central role in the company's own research and development. As of August 2026, Claude was leading 26% of Anthropic's R&D work, a significant increase from less than 1% in March. The company reported that AI agents collaborate with human researchers on more than 90% of all research tasks. Approximately 30,000 AI agents were performing research and engineering work at the company during that period.

To support its expanding technical capabilities, Anthropic has launched Claude Code Projects. This feature allows multiple AI agents to work in parallel on different components of a single product, utilizing shared memory and file libraries to coordinate complex engineering tasks.

Beyond software, Anthropic is expanding into the life sciences. The company has established a physical wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct biological experiments. This initiative aims to use AI to accelerate drug discovery and research into rare diseases that are often overlooked by the traditional pharmaceutical industry. While the company emphasizes that Claude does not yet operate fully autonomously and requires human oversight, the move signals a shift toward using AI to manage both digital and physical scientific processes.
