Anthropic implements invisible watermarks for Claude AI content

Anthropic has announced the implementation of invisible, machine-readable watermarks for content generated by its Claude AI models. This move is intended to comply with transparency requirements set by the European Union's AI Act. The technology is being rolled out globally and applies to all Claude services, including the API, Claude Code, and outputs through cloud partners like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.

For text, the watermark is embedded directly into the model's output at the token level. This method is designed to be imperceptible to users and does not alter the quality or readability of the text. Crucially, the mark is intended to persist even when the content is copied and pasted or undergoes minor editing. For visual files such as PNG, JPG, and SVG, Anthropic is utilizing the C2PA open standard to attach cryptographically signed provenance metadata.

Experts and users have noted both the benefits and limitations of this system. While it aids in identifying AI involvement, a detected watermark does not definitively prove that the AI authored the entire content; it may simply indicate that the model was used to translate, summarize, or proofread human-written material. Additionally, heavy editing or paraphrasing may render the watermark undetectable.
