Anthropic launches Model Hardware Standard for AI device control
Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new software specification designed to allow AI agents to interact directly with physical devices. Developed in collaboration with the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, the standard acts as a universal driver, enabling AI models to discover, connect to, and control programmable hardware such as microscopes, robotic arms, liquid handlers, and lasers.
By providing a common interface using simple commands like 'read' and 'write', MHS aims to solve the long-standing problem of hardware fragmentation in laboratories and manufacturing plants. Currently, integrating diverse equipment often requires weeks of custom software development; Anthropic reports that MHS can reduce this integration time to mere hours or minutes. The standard is model-agnostic, meaning it is designed to work with AI models beyond Claude.
Early testing has demonstrated significant performance gains. QuEra reported that MHS-integrated AI increased the success rate of laser relock tasks from 58% to 99.3%. Carnegie Mellon University successfully integrated four devices in eight hours, and Genentech has utilized the technology to automate protein assays.
Anthropic is currently offering a closed research preview to select scientific and industrial partners. The company intends to open-source the standard following rigorous safety evaluations to ensure AI agents operate within defined physical constraints, such as speed and angle limits, to prevent equipment damage or human injury.
