Anthropic launches AI grant program to accelerate rare disease research

Anthropic announced a new AI for Science Rare Disease Research Grants program that will provide up to $50,000 in Claude API credits to selected researchers and biotech start‑ups. The funding aims to speed the discovery of disease mechanisms and the development of therapies for more than 7,000 rare diseases that affect roughly 400 million people worldwide.

The program has two tracks: one supporting basic‑science collaboration among clinicians, patient groups and data scientists, and another backing early‑stage biotechnology companies developing treatments. Recipients will receive credit to use Claude Opus or other approved models for six months, with applications due by 2 August 2026.

Anthropic hopes the initiative will help consolidate fragmented patient data, identify genetic patterns, and enable researchers to generate new hypotheses more quickly, leveraging AI to handle large, scattered datasets rather than replace scientists.
