Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 AI model at half the cost of Fable 5

Anthropic announced the release of Claude Opus 5 on 24 July 2026. The new flagship model delivers performance close to the company’s top‑tier Claude Fable 5 on a range of software‑engineering and knowledge‑work benchmarks while charging only half the price. Pricing is set at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, versus $10 / $50 for Fable 5.

Safety testing shows Opus 5 triggers its internal safety classifiers about 85 % less often than Fable 5 and is purposefully not trained for offensive cyber‑operations, resulting in lower exploit capability than Anthropic’s Mythos 5. Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of product management, said the company aims to make advanced AI “accessible in each generation” and to give enterprises a cost‑effective, reliable alternative to competing models.

The model is now the default for Claude Max and the most capable option in Claude Pro, available through the Claude API, Claude Code and other Anthropic platforms. Anthropic positions Opus 5 as a strategic response to pricing pressures in the AI market, contrasting its enterprise‑focused business model with OpenAI’s consumer‑scale approach.
