Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 AI model at half the cost of Fable 5

Anthropic announced on July 24, 2026 the release of Claude Opus 5, a new flagship AI model. The company says Opus 5 delivers performance close to its top‑tier Fable 5 model while costing half as much—$5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, the same rates as the previous Opus 4.8. Opus 5 becomes the default engine on Claude Max and the most capable option on Claude Pro, and is available via Anthropic’s API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.

Benchmarks show Opus 5 within 0.5 % of Fable 5 on CursorBench 3.2 at maximum effort, more than doubling Opus 4.8’s score on Frontier‑Bench and achieving three‑times higher ARC‑AGI 3 scores than competing models. It also outperforms rivals on OSWorld 2.0 and other coding and knowledge‑work tests. Safety controls are tighter than previous models, with lower susceptibility to deceptive prompts, though the model is less suited for dual‑use cybersecurity tasks compared with Anthropic’s Mythos 5.

The launch underscores Anthropic’s focus on delivering high‑performance, cost‑effective AI for enterprise workloads, positioning Opus 5 as a middle‑ground between the cheaper Sonnet line and the premium Fable 5.
