Anthropic plans AI‑powered drug development targeting neglected diseases

Anthropic announced at the Claude Science presentation during The Briefing: AI for Science that it will develop its own medicines using its Claude AI platform. The company aims to focus on diseases that are underserved by traditional pharmaceutical companies and plans to work with partners in the pharma and biotech sectors while building its own laboratories and hiring biologists.

Eric Kauderer‑Abrams, head of life‑science at Anthropic, said the firm wants to “experience the challenges first‑hand” to improve AI tools. Experts such as Matthew Todd and Frank von Delft cautioned that, despite AI accelerating discovery, human oversight, laboratory tests and clinical trials will remain essential before any AI‑designed drug can be approved.
