Anthropic quietly restores Claude Fable 5 model after U.S. export ban

Anthropic’s high‑performance Claude Fable 5 model, launched on June 9 2026 and pulled three days later by a U.S. Commerce Department export‑control order, is now reappearing. Amazon Bedrock’s documentation updated on June 23 lists the model with regional availability in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio) and global inference profiles, a sign that the shutdown has been reversed. The Claude Code release notes also retain the v2.1.170 changelog that originally introduced Fable 5, and recent v2.1.190 package strings indicate a shift to a subscription plan that includes a weekly usage quota, suggesting a change in the commercial model alongside the technical reinstatement. Anthropic has not issued a formal announcement, but the infrastructure updates point to a resolution with regulators and a planned return of the model to developers.

The reinstatement restores access for customers on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry, GitHub Copilot and the Claude API, where the model was previously priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Developers have noted the rapid removal and return, describing the episode as a “whiplash” for the AI community.
