Anthropic report reveals AI misuse in DRC-Rwanda conflict

A report by AI company Anthropic has identified a network using its Claude AI tool to conduct information manipulation related to the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The investigation, titled “Detecting and Countering Misuse of AI,” uncovered a network of fake news websites that published 318 articles designed to create pro-government content and defend Kinshasa’s position.

The operation focused on regional mineral deals and ongoing tensions with Rwanda. Researchers noted that the network’s audience growth coincided with its strategy, observing that fake personas on X (formerly Twitter) were heavily tied to the DRC. While the report identified a Congolese civilian “digital army” account following the network, researchers stated they found no evidence that the activity was directly directed by any government.
