Anthropic resets Claude usage limits as OpenAI rolls out GPT‑5.6 and ChatGPT Work

On 10 July (Japan time), Anthropic announced on X that it had cleared the 5‑hour and weekly rate limits for all Claude users. The reset coincided with an extension of the free‑tier access to the Fable 5 model, which was originally scheduled to end on 7 July but was prolonged to 12 July (Japanese time). The move follows earlier interruptions to Fable 5 after US export‑control actions in June, and the model’s subsequent global reinstatement on 1 July.

The reset required no user action and applied to every Claude account, removing the short‑term and long‑term caps that normally pause service when reached. At the same time, OpenAI launched its GPT‑5.6 series and the enterprise‑focused ChatGPT Work product, also resetting its own usage limits to enable immediate trial of the new features. Pricing for usage beyond the free tier is higher than Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 offering, reflecting the premium nature of the models.

Anthropic’s reset is seen as a competitive response to OpenAI’s announcement, highlighting the intensifying rivalry in advanced AI agents and subscription‑based access models.
