Anthropic faces valuation shifts and rising financing costs amid AI infrastructure scrutiny
The artificial intelligence sector is experiencing a significant shift in investor sentiment, moving from a focus on technical potential to a demand for proven revenue and profitability. Anthropic, a leading AI firm, has seen its IPO valuation expectations adjusted from approximately $2 trillion down to $1.5 trillion. Despite reporting $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue—a 45% increase from the previous quarter—the deceleration in growth compared to previous triple-digit surges has led to more cautious market pricing.
To fund its massive infrastructure needs, including the procurement of Google-developed TPUs, Anthropic is pursuing a $60 billion debt financing deal through Blackstone. This transaction, known as ‘Project North Star’, carries a 10% interest rate, a notable increase from the 8.5% rate seen in a similar $4.4 billion financing round just four months ago. This rise in borrowing costs reflects growing investor caution regarding the high capital expenditures required for AI scaling.
Simultaneously, the broader AI infrastructure market is facing valuation corrections. Nscale, an NVIDIA-backed data center developer, has encountered resistance to its $30 billion IPO target, with investors suggesting a range of $16 billion to $19 billion is more realistic. Challenges such as rising interest rates, power constraints, and project delays in the UK and Norway are complicating the path to profitability for heavy-asset AI infrastructure providers.
