Anthropic settles copyright lawsuit for $1.5 billion

A legal dispute between authors and Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI, has resulted in a $1.5 billion settlement. The case, Bartz vs. Anthropic, centered on the use of copyrighted books to train Large Language Models (LLMs).

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California ruled that using legally acquired books for AI training constitutes ‘fair use,’ though it explicitly excluded pirated copies from this classification. While the settlement resolves the immediate dispute, it does not provide a definitive high-court clarification on the broader fair-use questions surrounding generative AI and intellectual property.
