Anthropic signals possible comeback of Fable 5 in Claude code update
On June 24, a user on X identified string changes in the binary of Claude Code v2.1.190 that reference a weekly usage quota for Anthropic’s Fable 5 model. The new message, “You’ve used your Fable 5 usage for this week,” replaces earlier wording about the model being purchased separately, suggesting it could become a permanently included subscription feature.
The clues appear shortly after the U.S. government ordered the suspension of Fable 5 (and the Mythos model) on June 12, citing safety‑guard concerns. Since then, Fable 5 has resurfaced in the Amazon Bedrock catalog, and reports indicate Anthropic has shifted its negotiations with U.S. officials to co‑founder Tom Brown, replacing CEO Dario Amodei as the primary interlocutor. No formal announcement of a reinstatement has been made, but the code modifications imply the company is preparing for a potential return of the model.
Anthropic continues to contest the suspension, arguing the identified safeguard flaws do not justify a full market withdrawal. The situation remains speculative pending an official decision.
