Anthropic signs lease for proposed $22 billion Australian AI data center

US-based AI company Anthropic has signed a lease to become the first major tenant of the Western Downs Digital Park, a proposed massive AI data center in rural Queensland, Australia. The project, proposed by Singaporean developer Zerra DC, carries an estimated value of $22 billion.

Located in the Western Downs region, the facility would consist of four buildings, each roughly the size of five football fields, and would require temporary accommodation for 1,500 workers during construction. While the state government has shown enthusiasm, the project has not yet received formal approval, and the final decision rests with the local council.

The proposal comes amid a national debate in Australia regarding artificial intelligence and the need for responsible growth. While proponents highlight the potential for economic diversification and job creation in an area currently dominated by agriculture and gas, the Australian government is emphasizing the need for regulatory guardrails following recent data security concerns.
